Circa 1830's. Clip point blade, no ricasso, stamped in its face "J. ENGLISH, PHILA., 1". Carved ebony handle scales with 10 domed silver pins, mounted on fabricated nickel silver handle frame, nickel silver escutcheon and ball end guard. Associated red morocco leather sheath with nickel silver tip & throat. Blade with sharpening scratches and scattered pitting, handles with small stress cracks, sheath with damage to throat and scattered scuffing. Ex. Norm Flayderman, Mike Worley collections. Publications: “The Bowie Knife, Unsheathing an American Legend” by Norm Flayderman (2004), p.455 This knife is speculated to be a predecessor of the English & Hubers knives.
