Circa 1836-38. Clip point blade with sharpened false edge, forged bolster marked "GRAVELEY [&] WREAKS NEW YORK"; blade is fully etched in a panel with “The Hunters Companion / My Horse Knife and Rifle.” Nickel silver frame handle with stamped acanthus leaf decorations, guard integral to the frame, ivory scales, escutcheons on both. Associated scabbard of nickel silver. Blade is in superb antique condition with a great deal of the original polish visible, a few nicks in the edge, scattered spotting particularly on reverse, the etch somewhat faded towards tip. Handle scales with several short cracks. Graveley & Wreaks was a New York retailer in business from 1836 to 1838, the knife was made for them in Sheffield, England. This style of knife appears to have been offered for sale in a July, 1836 advertisement for the firm in the New York Morning Courier, which lists for sale “ARKANSAS, TEXAS and HUNTERS knives...” the blade etch indicates that this was the “Hunters” style of knife.
