Tang and breech are decorated with finely executed chiseled scrolls and the top flat is inscribed "Searles B. Rouge". Back action lockplate marked "Searles" in script and engraved with deep scrolls and florals, hammer engraved en suite. Engraved silver furniture includes barrel key escutcheons on each side of forend, ramrod ferrule, triggerguard bow and finial. Oval gold sideplate inscribed "S. Henderson" in the same style that it is marked by the maker. Small octagonal vacant wrist escutcheon. Figured varnished walnut stock with checkered panels on each side of grip. Excellent condition, barrel and lock retain a light grey patina with some scattered marks and minor dark spots. Percussion mechanism is strong. Silver retains a grey unpolished patina, engraving is sharp. Stock shows some minor wear to checkering and a few minor scattered marks, one minor crack below lockplate and beneath lock screw on left side. This well known pistol was made by Daniel Searles for Stephen Henderson, who was a silver plater in Philadelphia. James Black apprenticed under Henderson. There is also a Searles Bowie knife with the same "Henderson" inscription on a silver inlaid escutcheon on the grip.
