Manufactured in 1900. These stout weapons were a mainstay at prisons and used for guarding trains, banks and express wagons throughout the country. Rarely do you find an early third year production with the scarce solid frame and round knob stock. This shotgun has all the early features including a grooved full round walnut forend with three screws and a smooth steel shotgun buttplate. Finish is blued and the screws retain nearly all of the original early high polish Nitre blue. Legends are perfect. The barrel and forward section of the magazine retain 95% or better original factory blue. Frame retains approximately 40-50% of the brilliant Winchester high polish blue finish with balance gun metal grey patina. Stocks are excellent with no visible cracks. Left side of barrel is stamped “CYL” for cylinder bore. Has a single bead sight. Action is perfect. Excellent shiny bore. This is one of the finest early round knob factory riot guns we have encountered. They are never seen this early with round knob in such high original condition. Now for the rub, factory letter states that this shotgun left the factory with a 20" barrel, it is presently 18". Front sight bead set back is 1/2". There is no roughness at muzzle and appears to be either factory or professionally shortened, or may simply be a recording error at the factory, because it is hard to imagine that such a high condition, lightly used shotgun of this era would retain such high condition and yet someone would take 2" off of the barrel. Regardless of whether it was taken down or mis-recorded, we will let the buyer decide. Either way, a beautiful, early riot gun.
