Stephen Grant worked for Thomas Boss in London until 1857 when Boss' widow made him a managing partner. In 1867 he set up his own firm at 67A St. James' Street, London, where he worked until 1889 when his two sons joined the business. Grant was cautious making sure that his designs were fully effective and reliable before putting them into production. This example features a Dickson round action with side pedal. Round Damascus steel barrels with solid rib and single steel bead, rib marked with large "1", originally probably one of a pair and engraved with the maker's name and address as listed above. Engraved breeches and recoil shields. Rounded boxlock action finely engraved with English rose and scroll designs. Both sides marked "STEPHEN GRANT" and right side featuring opening/cocking pedal. Action tang is engraved with fine scrolls and "PATENT" in an oval. Features include: extractors, automatic safeties and double triggers. Blued triggerguard and opener engraved en suite. Figured walnut English straight stock with checkered wrist and checkered hard rubber buttplate. Checkered walnut splinter fore arm with Anson release. Complete with English reproduction leather case with partitioned green velour interior with Stephen Grant & Sons label on inside of lid, wooden Gatley snap caps and two wood handled screwdrivers. Excellent condition, as refinished, barrels retain about 90% of reapplied Damascus finish with some wear at breeches and muzzles. Bores are excellent and bright. Action retains polished finish with sharp engraving. Refinished stocks are excellent with a few light marks, actions are tight. Case is excellent with a few minor scuffs and storage marks. All numbers are matching.
CORRECTION: The barrels are Nitro proofed.
