Approximately 1,000 pistols were manufactured for sale to the Portuguese Navy by DWM. They were produced after the Republic of Portugal was formed in 1910. Chamber is stamped "R.P." with anchor for the Royal Navy. Toggle is stamped "DWM". At the time the book "Lugers At Random" was printed in 1969, only three examples had been reported. Since then, more have surfaced, but it is still considered an extremely rare and desirable early military contract. Pistol has all matching numbers. Right panel of checkered walnut grips has a stamp but is not readable. Wood bottom magazine is not numbered with no visible stamps. Numbered grip safety. As with most of the known examples, this pistol shows use with some age freckling on barrel and wear on all high edges. 75% blue mixing with brown patina. Toned grip straps. Very good walnut stocks with wear and flattening. Fine bore and action. Good, honest example of a very scarce military contract pistol.
