These were manufactured by the American Machine Works from 1861 to 1865. This is a single shot breech loader with an octagon to round barrel, iron mountings, blued finish, case hardened breech, walnut stocks, and sling ring mounted on left side of breech. This was a very popular carbine during the Civil War with Union Cavalry regiments that included 3rd West Virginia, 7th & 11th Illinois, 1st Cennecticut, 7th & 17th Pennsylvania, 6th & 9th Ohio, and 1st Massachusetts. This rifle saw little use during its lifetime. Remains in fine, all original condition. Barrel retains approximately 90% of the original factory blue. Has the military style flip up sight. The latch retains approximately 85% of the Nitre blue finish. Frame retains approximately 40% original case colors with the balance simply patterned out. Buttplate is basically a gray patina. Left side of barrel has the inspectors stamp, "L.F.R." which is for Lafeyette F. Rogers who inspected Smith carbines during the last two years of the Civil War. Left side of stock a strong, script, "JH" in oval for John Hannis. Has a near mint bore and perfect action. Wood is excellent to near mint with a couple of expected dings. Very fine condition carbine.
