This is an original Civil War 1863 rifled musket that was altered to carbine length by shortening the barrel, resetting the front sight, shortening the stock. Left side of stock still has the "E.S.A." inspector stamp in oval. Left side of barrel has "VP" eagle head stamp. Top of barrel is dated 1863. Lock is dated 1863 with "U.S. Springfield" and eagle. Has eagle stamped on percussion bolster. Standard 1863 rear sight, two barrel bands, ramrod, walnut stock, and finished in the white. Case colored hammer with some case color present. Buttplate is stamped "U.S.". Top of comb is stamped "21". Right side of stock has "51" stenciled in white. Has a period style canvas sling. Fine action and strong, rifled bore. Very interesting and well done carbine conversion. Period of alteration unknown. Great Civil War reenactor piece.
