Rifled round barrel with bayonet lug/front sight mounted on top near muzzle and adjustable rear sight with flip-up leaf. Barrel retains traces of U.S. inspector's marks on left side near breech. Flat percussion lockplate dated 1864 at tail, marked in center with large eagle over "U.S." and stamped "WM. MUIR & CO. / WINDSOR LOCKS, CT.". Standard Model 1861 steel furniture. Good condition; all steel surfaces have been cleaned and now retain a light grey patina with some scattered areas of pitting with scattered marks from use. Stock has been sanded and retains traces of cartouches, otherwise with a few marks from use. This maker is one of 25 major contractors during the Civil War that supplied the U.S. Government. They made 30,000 rifle-muskets of this model for the Army.
