Curved nickel plated single fuller blade, blue and gilt decorated etchings, including large patriotic eagle, scrolls, arms motifs, cannons, and large "US". Left ricasso marked "THE/PETIBONE/BROS./MFG. CO/CINTO. O". Fine and ornate gilt brass hilt, pierced guard features a relief eagle surrounded by arms, a small folding counterguard with pierced scrollwork. The knucklebow displays a lion's head in high relief and near the pommel, a silver coiled up rattlesnake. Spine decorated with relief scrolls going into pommel with an eagle in flight mounted on top. Quillon is a knight's head. Solid silver grip with oak leaf and acanthus accents and wrapped with braided gilt brass wire. Nickel plated steel scabbard with relief decorated gilt brass mounts. Throat mount displays a patriotic eagle holding a shield and surrounded by arms, the center mount with a soldier standing with his musket in relief, and the drag is heavily decorated with fine scrolls. The scabbard is inscribed "PRESENTED TO/MAJ. W.H. HOLMES/BY THE ENLISTED MEN 2ND BATTALION 8TH P.V.I./CAMP MACKENZIE, GA./MARCH 6TH 1899". Very good condition; blade retains about 95% original nickel, gilt, and blue finishes, some minor scabbard drag marks and freckling near tip. Hilt retains about 70-80% gilt finish and shows some minor edge wear. Grip polished with dark patina in lower areas. Scabbard retains 70-75% nickel and gilt finishes, some areas with dark patina where finish is missing. A fine post Civil War presentation sword!
