Circa 1840-50's. Measures 8" closed. Locking spear point blade marked "S.C. WRAGG, 25 FURNACE HILL, SHEFFIELD"; blade fully etched with scrollwork, spread winged eagle and the words “American Hunting Knife”. Ivory handle scales, with very rare horse-alligator guard and coffin shaped horse alligator pommel. Blade shortened slightly, repinned, locking latch and handle scales replaced. Blade spring worn, blade is slightly loose. Ex. Logan Sewell collection. Publications: “The Antique Bowie Knife Book” by Adams, Voyles, Moss (1990), pp. 218-219 Samuel Wragg is considered by many to be the premier maker of folding Bowie and folding dirk knives. This one is a very rare example with a horse-alligator guard as well as pommel.
