Curved tapered horn body of 12" in length with tapered spout carved with relief ring above a double ring with serrated edges. Bulbous, presumably wooden, plug covered with leather and decorated with brass tacks, small steel loop for strap in center. Main body retains a yellow patina and terminates with a scalloped edge before spout section. Engraved with an Indian holding a bow in one hand an an arrow in the other. Also engraved with two foxes, a buck feeding on a tree, a detailed ship, and "FORT ONDERIO" (Fort Ontario) above a detailed rendering of the fort flying a British flag. Complete with string strap and period leather wrap near spout. Very good condition; showing scattered marks from age and use. Shows stress and wear commensurate with its age. Fort Ontario was built by the British in 1755 during the French and Indian War at the east end of Lake Ontario. It was built to bolster defenses already in place at Fort Oswego on the opposite side of the river.
