Comprising: A) A Circular solid gold badge with a pierced five-point star in the center. Inscribed with black enameled "JAMES B. HUME/Under/Sheriff/El Dorado Co." Engraved with borders and small sprigs of engraving at star points. Back has a large horizontal gold pin. Excellent condition; showing only a couple minor surface scratches. James Hume was hired as Under Sheriff in 1864 in El Dorado and became Sheriff after winning the 1868 election, his office began in 1869. In 1872, he became a Chief Special Officer of Wells Fargo & Co., where he earned his fame by capturing the notorious stagecoach robber "Black Bart". B) Shield-shaped solid gold badge with convex face and engraved with a detailed border around the perimeter. Enameled and shadow-engraved inscription in blue and gold "James B. Hume/SHERIFF/EL DORADO CAL." The back features a single large solid gold pin running vertically. Excellent condition; a few minor scratches to surface and nice, darker patina around some lower engraved areas.
