Referred to as the Union carbine, manufactured in Hamilton, Ohio. Approximately 8,200 made between 1863 and 1864. This is a breech loading, percussion, single shot, falling block saddle ring carbine with part octagon blued barrel, iron mountings, case hardened frame, lock and hammer with walnut stocks. Sling mount on left side of frame. This was very popular with the Union Cavalry outfits in Tennessee, Ohio, Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa, Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, and Kentucky. Sideplate is stamped "GWYN & CAMPBELL". Frame is stamped "UNION RIFLE". All matching numbers. Mint cartouche on left side of frame; "WHR" in octagonal box for William H. Russell, who inspected the Type II carbine. Metal has the "T" inspector mark on barrel and an "R" on the block, tang and left side of frame. Left side has saddle ring and bar. This carbine saw little to no use. Barrel retains approximately 95% original blue finish. Frame retains 30-50% case colors, balance patina. Wood is near mint and still has raised grain. Perfect action. Strong, near mint bore. This carbine has seen little to no use; either issued after the Civil War or to a state militia.
