This lot consists of an oval shaped portrait of a Major Philip Sheridan, who was a Union General in the American Civil War. He is known for his high rise in the Army, which was most likely due to his closeness to General and President Ulysses S. Grant. Not only is he known for this, but he is well known for being victorious at the Shenandoah Valley, which later became known as "The Burning." Major Sheridan is depicted with his body as a front on portrait to display his uniform, while his face is turned to a three quarter profile. The military costume that the major wears has large golden buttons going down the front of the jacket and shoulder stars on either shoulder. Major Sheridan has a serious look on his face as if he is remembering the battles that he has won. The portrait is encased in an oval wooden frame that is golden in color and carved in design. At the bottom of the frame, “Sheridan” is carved. The painting was not taken out of the frame for examination and displays wear in the frame and painting- wood deficient areas and cracks, along with a minor puncture in the canvas. Please take note that there is a puncture in the canvas as well.

Condition: (Good).

Item Dimensions: Framed: 36-1/2" x 30".
