Heavy French style officers saber. Washer is a slightly elevated capstand on a long one piece angled silver lion pommel. The only relief decoration is on the lions mane and has a flaring leaf cluster, which is attached the ribbon, hiding a portion of the grip. The basket has three thick branches attached to the side of the counterguard. Hallmarked "J. MERICK" on left side of hilt. James C. Merrick was born in North Carolina and worked in Alabama. Horn grip with elevated lines on the front and back with four lines and embellished checkering on both sides. The curved Spanish blade has a slight center fuller. Blade is engraved on the obverse with sprigs and stands of arms along with “POT ILI RPY” in scripts. The reverse is engraved with “Y POT ALI RPY.” The leather scabbard has large sturdy mounts. Hilt: 5-3/4”. Copy of the book featuring this sword will be included. Sword is featured on page 661-662 figure 598 of "American Silver-Hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords" by Daniel Hartzler. Excellent condition; blade retains a grey patina, scabbard excellent with a few minor age cracks and minor shrinkage. Grip has a long age crack on right side, silver is excellent, showing little wear and some areas of darker patina, drag has a couple minor dents.
