Circa 1830's. Double edged blade with central fuller and extended ricasso, marked on both sides "WOODCOCK’S CELEBRATED CUTLERY" and "UNIVERSALLY APPROVED" (in an oval). One piece ivory handle carved with horsehead pommel, inset eyes are glass. Blued steel crossguard, foliate nickel silver ferrule. Original embossed morocco leather sheath with nickel silver fittings. Blade is unsharpened with 70% original polish, some spotting, tip slightly reshaped. Ivory handle with crack on top side and a few minor age checks, chips to tips of horse’s ears, one eye repaired. Sheath in superb condition with only minor scuffing. Several other knives with identical handles are known bearing different markings, most of them by James Rodgers. Woodcock, the name on this and the well known carved alligator folding bowie sold in our January auction, is thought to have been the firm responsible for doing carving.
