Manufactured 1849. Only a total of 7,000 of these were manufactured with serial numbers continued from the Whitneyville. This is a Martially marked U.S. specimen. Small "U.S." stamp on left side of frame under Colt's patent. The "U" is very weak. Inspector marks include: "K" on loading lever; left side of frame has a "P"; trigger guard is stamped with a "Q"; "P" on top of backstrap, a visible but not readable cartouche on both walnut grip panels; "K" stamped on cylinder. First Model features include U.S. mounted rifles engraved cylinder scene by Ormsby and oval cylinder stops, brass square-back trigger guard. Top of barrel from breech reds "Address SAML Colt New York City". All original nipples. Retains approximately 70-80% visible scene. Matching serial number on frame, trigger guard, backstrap and barrel. Wedge is stamped "80". As to condition, it is a clean and crisp, smooth patina with sharp edges and legends. Screws are extremely sharp with the exception of wedge retaining screw. Indexes and locks up tight. Strong, clean bore. Brass has never been touched. Grips show light shrinkage. Far above average, rare First Model Dragoon that remains in excellent condition having never been worked on, cleaned or polished in any way. This was the first U.S. issue large caliber multi-round revolving handgun used by the U.S. military with few surviving in this fine condition.
