Heavy round rifled barrel with bayonet lug mounted on right side near muzzle. Breech marked "B / P / (Eagle's Head)" and "FCW" on left side and tang numbered 3887. Flat percussion lockplate dated 1863 at tail. Fitted with a 1,000 yard flip-up adjustable rear sight. Center stamped with large patriotic eagle, flag and "U.S. WHITNEY / VILLE". Steel furniture includes two barrel bands, special trigger guard with spur, sling swivels and U.S. marked buttplate. Walnut stock deeply stamped with cartouche and "FGW". Complete with steel ramrod, brass hilted yatigan bayonet marked "COLLINS & CO / HARTFORD / CONN" and scarce bowie knife bayonet stamped "U.S. N / D. / R. / 1863" on ricasso of clip point blade. Brass spine with steel catch and wooden grip with finger grooves. Good condition; barrel retains a brown patina with some pitting near breech. Breech area has been cleaned and has very good markings. Lock retains a polished grey patina with some freckling and dark spots. Steel furniture has been cleaned and has some minor pitting. Stock very good with some scattered marks from use and one minor replaced splinter on left side of forend. Bayonets are both good with very good markings. Blades have been heavily cleaned. Hilts and blades both have scattered marks from use. CORRECTION: Complete with rare Dahlgren bayonet.
