The Second Model Schofield was manufactured from 1876 to 1877 only with 5,934 manufactured for the United States Cavalry, serial number range 3036 to 8969. The most obvious difference on Second Model is the shape of the latch viewed from side as a rounded circle at top. Standard features include six shot, single action, blued finish, case colored hammer and trigger guard, and two piece walnut grips with cartouche and date on left panel “JRJr 1876” (Lt. James Rockwell, Jr.) and cartouche on right panel (“CW” Charles Woodman). Top of the backstrap is stamped 120 which indicates this United States revolver was issued to the San Francisco police department. The barrel retains nearly all of the original factory high polish blue in flutes; balance has turned a soft grey patina with some minor age freckling and razor sharp legends. The cylinder, while basically patina as well, has bright blue within the flutes. Frame retains approximately 85% of the brilliant factory bright high polish blue finish. Front grip strap retains 40% original blue starting to freckle, and rear grip strap is grey patina. Traces of color on hammer and sides of trigger guard. This is a very fine example of a very rare San Francisco police issue of which only a few hundred ever shipped.
