Manufactured 1870 to 1872 with roughly 8,000 total manufactured. According to the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson", page 104, a few Americans were made with 6" or 7" barrels. On factory short barrels, the lettering on top of the rib is centered, in this case, from the last digit to end of frame is 2-1/4", on an 8" barrel gun, the set back is closer to 2-5/8", which would put the writing closest to the muzzle to close to the front sight if cut. Other features include half moon nickel front sight, six shot, single action, blued finish and two piece walnut grips. This revolver has a rare sling swivel that is factory and is to the rear of the complete serial number. The ring is stamped "M2". Factory rounded crown with proper front taper on rib, proper front sight setting. Metal is basically brown patina. Two piece walnut grips have a few usual dings. There is no oil hole. The cylinder, barrel and latch have matching assembly No. 12. Sharp barrel legends. The right grip panel is stamped with matching serial number. Excellent, strong rifled bore with usual minor black powder abrasion. Indexes and locks up like new. Nice, clean, all patina short-barreled First Model American. Factory letter indicates 25 units sent March 6th, 1871 to M.W. Robinson, N.Y.C., no barrel lengths listed.
