This rifle remains in excellent, near mint all original condition. Even has the original 1898 rear sight. Barrel retains 98% original factory blue finish with just a hint of freckling. Rear sight retains all of the blue finish. Barrel band has 90% original high polish blue. Extractor has 85% of the high polish Nitre blue. Box magazine is a blue-grey. Frame and magazine sideplate are a soft blue. Nose cap has 90% of the high polish blue finish. Trigger guard has 80% of the high polish blue finish. All three sling swivels. Buttplate is grey. Walnut stock is near mint with just a couple of minor dings. Bottom of wrist has a perfect proof "P" with serifs in circle. Left side of stock has a perfect "JSA 1901" (Joseph S. Adams) cartouche in rectangle. Adams' first job for inspecting all new U.S. arms was assigned on June 27th, 1894. Strong, clean bore. ME reading: .5. Buttplate has unit number 1410 stamped on tang. If you have been looking for a high condition, near mint, no excuse, all original Model 1898 Krag that has never been rebuilt or changed, you would be extremely hard-pressed to improve on this example.
