This model is known as the Second Model Allin Trapdoor. It was designed by Erskine S. Allin. A total of 25,000 were made in 1866 from altered Springifled Model 1863 Civil War muskets. The barrels were lined with a .50 caliber tube. Round rifled steel barrel with blued breech block dated 1866 and marked with an eagle's head proof mark on top. Breech also stamped with an eagle's head and "65". Folding rear sight with two peep holes and front sight/bayonet lug mounted on top. Casehardened lockplate and hammer, lockplate dated 1864 and stamped with a large eagle and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" in center. Standard steel Model 1863 furniture. Plain full length walnut stock with three crisp inspector's cartouches. including that of Erskine S. Allin himself. Complete with steel ramrod/cleaning rod. Excellent condition. Barrel retains a light gray patina with some darker freckling. Breech block retains about 90% thinning blue finish. Lock and hammer retain about 70% faded case colors. Furniture polished bright with some minor freckling. Stock excellent with a few scattered storage marks.
