This was the primary musket carried by Union troops during the Civil War. Round rifled steel barrel with bayonet lug/front sight mounted on top, near muzzle and two leaf folding rear sight. Breech dated 1863 and marked "V/P/Eagle's head" proof flat percussion lockplate dated 1864 and stamped in center with a large eagle and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD". Standard Model 1861 steel furniture and ramrod. Full length walnut stock marked with two crisp inspector's cartouches, "ESA" cartouche for inspector Erskine S. Allin and "JG" was an unknown sub-inspector. Very good condition. All steel components retain an even grey patina with some dark spots and a few scattered marks from use. Trigger guard has some freckling and buttplate has a replaced screw. Stock very good with a few scattered marks and some areas with losses to finish. Overall, this is a very nice example of one of the most important longarms used in the Civil War.
