This carbine began its life as a standard Model 1896 Infantry rifle that was converted to carbine configuration with the exception that it does not have a saddle ring. The rear sight is not a carbine sight but has the proper profile of an 1896 carbine as converted. Barrel has deep blue-brown patina, as does basically the rest of the metal. Left side "JSA 1897" cartouche is visible but is a little weak. There is a letter "J" on left side of stock. Letter "P" in circle is still at wrist, visible but faint. Stock is in excellent condition. Hand guard has a hairline crack that runs from sight to breech but it is closed and easily repaired. Some one has put on a new Uncle Mike's sling. Perfect muzzle reading of 0. Strong rifling. Overall a nice looking conversion that should be a good shooter.
