This lot consists of a portrait of the First Lady to President James Madison, Dolley Payne Madison, as noted by the didactic that is attached to the verso of the piece. Depicted in this portrait is the First Lady done in a very traditional portraiture style of early colonial America, with her seated in a large comfortable chair with a heavy red curtain draped from the right side of the image, revealing a beautiful blue sky as seen in the window on the left side of the image. What is noticeable and remarkable about this portrait is that it is one of a pair. The other portrait that is to accompany this one is that of President James Madison. His portrait is the opposite of the First Lady's, so that they may be hung besides one another on the wall and face each other. The first lady is dressed in early colonial style clothing that hints to the Grecian era with her high waited dress. The painting is framed in a wooden gilt colored frame. Overall the item is in good condition with normal wear present and craquelure.

Condition: (Very Good).

Item Dimensions: Framed: 29-1/4" x 33-1/4".
