He studied with Louis Cabat and at a young age he travelled to the North African country of Algeria. He was one if the first artists to interpret life in Algeria in his work and it became a subject of preference along with landscapes and everyday country life subjects. Paintings by Fromentin can command as much as 200-350,000 dollars at auction and frequently sell in the 20-50,000 dollar range. This painting is fresh to the market from a collection with no prior auction history.
