July 22nd 2017 Premier Fine & Decorative Art & Watches
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 7/22/2017
This lot consists of a framed portrait of President Washington, the first President of the United States. Even though this portrait is on the smaller side, it is quite similar to the Lansdowne portrait of George Washington that is housed in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. The Lansdowne portrait was painted by Gilbert Stuart. It could be possible this image was a study for that image or another artist did a wonderful likeness of it. Not only is Washington portrayed with a very similar look on his face but the background is spot on with the Lansdowne- red followed by white/ cream and then shadow. President Washington also has the same ruffled white ascot that he dons in the Lansdowne. Please take note that this piece has taken some wear to it, as seen on the wooden frame and in the canvas. There is an area deficient of paint, craquelure, and it appears that the texture of the canvas is different in certain areas. If one looks closely, it appears as if the canvas was either restored or this piece was cut from a larger piece. When looking on the verso, it appears to be a new canvas and stretcher, which leads one to believe that this piece was restored and originally on an older canvas. Normal wear is present.
Condition: (Good).
Item Dimensions: 10-7/8" x 12-7/8".
