Over and under octagonal steel barrels separated by steel rib and fitted with brass tipped ramrod on each side, one for each barrel. The top barrel is rifled and stamped "J.H. PHILLIPS/GREENVILLE, PA". It has a brass blade front sight and rear notched sight with ramp to adjust elevation. Bottom barrel is a smoothbore shotgun barrel. Twin percussion back-action locks, one on each side, lockplates and hammers engraved with scrolls. Double set triggers. Plain German silver patchbox, buttplate, triggerguard, and five-point star inlaid on left side, above finely-carved cheekpiece. Stock of beautiful highly figured maple. Excellent original condition with barrels and locks retaining an even soft brown patina with a few light scattered marks and some minor wear, markings are excellent. Silver furniture retains a mellow patina and is unpolished. Stock retains much of original finish and has some minor marks from age. This is a great example made by a scarce Northwestern Pennsylvania maker, who was a very skilled craftsman, designer, and gunsmith. Combination Pennsylvania longrifles are quite rare, especially by this maker and in this condition.
