Cogswell & Harrison began in the business in 1770 and the Avant Tout hammer ejector gun was introduced in 1888. Twin "Argus" steel Nitro proofed barrels with silver bead at muzzle and white bead in center, solid rib marked "COGSWELL & HARRISON LTD. THE AVANT TOUT. 141 NEW BOND ST. & 226 STRAND, LONDON.", with rib extension and English proofs on bottoms, SCROLL ENGRAVED BREECHES. Casehardened boxlock actions, engraved with fine spiraling English scrolls, both side marked and "COGSWELL & HARRISON, LTD." Features include blued accents, double triggers, ejectors, and non-automatic thumb safeties. Figured walnut straight buttstock with oil finish, checkered panels on each side of wrist, vacant silver oval escutcheon on bottom, and brown "Old English" buttpad. Splinter forearm diamond section checkering. Complete with English case of leather with brass corner protectors, lid stamped "R.H. GREEN". Partitioned red felt interior with oil bottle and snap caps. Cogswell & Harrison paper label on inside of lid with 141 New Bond St. and 226 Strand addresses. Barrels retain about 98% proper and professionally re-applied blue finish with some light storage marks. Actions tight and retain 60-70% case colors, otherwise faded to grey. Stocks very good with some minor edge wear and sharp checkering. Bores are excellent and shiny. Case very good, replaced straps, exterior with scattered scuffing and marks from use, latch is missing. Interior with scattered areas of wear, staining, and losses to felt due to moth damage or deterioration. Label probably replaced. This is a very nice, high quality English double by an excellent maker.
