Manufactured 1855. This factory engraved revolver was built during the Gustave Young period (1852 to 1869). The gun is a standard 1849 Model with octagon barrel, five shot, single action with brass backstrap and trigger guard, and varnished one piece walnut grips. There is a small dot above or below all of the serial numbers. "SAM COLT" engraved on top flat. All matching numbers except wedge not numbered. Metal is basically brown patina. 20% original nickel plating on brass. Cylinder has some pitting and a barely visible scene. Original nipples. Scroll engraving on the side is very similar to page 57 in the book "Colt Engraving". Colt's patent with engraving around it has been custom done by the engraver, similar to that found on page 64. Trigger guard and backstrap have been engraved; trigger guard is similar to pages 64 and 65. Engraved hammer, frame, barrel, loading rod, trigger guard and rear grip strap. Indexes fine. Strong rifling with black powder abrasion. Gun is not listed in the Colt factory ledgers but is definitely the work of a Young or a member of his team. A very good example of an early 19th century Colt.
