Made with English parts and round smoothbore "LONDON" marked, British proofed steel barrel and "W/KETLAND" marked lock plate. This pistol was most likely part of an initiative by the Commissary General's Office of Philadelphia to clear the back stock of parts at Schuylkill Arsenal, authorizing civilian gunsmiths to draw parts from Schuylkill's storekeeper, and return the completed weapons for inspection. Standard English trade pistol style engraved brass furniture. Walnut stock and wooden ramrod. Left side of stock, behind sideplate stamped "ET" for inspector Elisha Tobey. Very good condition, brown patina on barrel and lock, which is in original flintlock configuration, but has a replaced frizzen spring. Brass unpolished. Stock with some scattered marks from use. A historic contract pistol that is rarely encountered.
