The Model 1836 was the last U.S. martial pistol made using the flintlock mechanism. About 41,000 were manufactured between 1836 and 1844 by Asa Waters and Robert Johnson. This was the standard issue pistol for the Mexican War and many were converted to percussion for later use during the American Civil War. Round smoothbore steel barrel marked "U.S./JCB/P/B" near breech, small brass half moon front sight and oval rear sight on tang. Flat beveled lockplate with rounded tail section, stamped in the center "U.S./R. JOHNSON/MIDDN CONN/1842", brass pan and reinforced cock. Standard Model 1836 steel furniture and swivel type ramrod with button plunger. Triggerguard stamped with small "H" inspector's mark. Partially figured walnut half-stock with two indistinct inspector's cartouches stamped behind sideplate, on left side. Very good condition, all steel components have been cleaned, retain a light grey patina with some freckling, and have a few scattered light marks. Lock has probably been professionally reconverted to flintlock configuration. Stock very good as refinished, with a few light marks age hairline cracks. This model is considered by many collectors to be the best made, best looking, and best performing flintlock martial pistol produced.
