Rare 2nd Model pistol made by the Virginia Manufactory and modeled after the Harpers Ferry Model 1805. Round smoothbore steel barre, unmarked, fitted with rib and steel swivel ramrod below. Flintlock mechanism with center of plate stamped “VIRGINIA” and tail stamped “RICHMOND/1814”, inside of plate is stamped “S” and back of pan "333". It has brass Model 1805 style furniture, including small triggerguard. Back of sideplate and inside of triggerguard bow stamped with "333". Walnut half stock and is wedge fastened. The Virginia Manufactory was established by the Act of 1797 to manufacture arms for the state militia. It was built along the James River and was initially in production from 1802 through 1820 and was run by James Haslett, who was formerly employed by McCormick. One of only 603 pistols made in 1814. Very good condition, overall, barrel and lock retain a spotted grey patina with some freckling and dark spots. Date on lock partially worn away. Probably original flint with top jaw and screw replaced, probably during the period of use. Brass has been cleaned and retains a mellow patina. Stock has some professionally replaced splinters and has been refinished. A great example of the rarest of Virginia Manufactory pistols.
