These Elgin cutlass pistols were made in 1837 by Morrill, Mosman, and Blair of Amherst, Massachusetts.. They were invented and patented by George Elgin around 1830, and inspired by the famous and popular Bowie knives. It is believed that N.P. Ames supplied the blades for these pistols to Morrill, Mosman, and Blair, due to the type of engraving, as well as the style. Round, unmarked rifled steel barrel with clip point blade mounted below, attached with dovetailed rail on bottom of barrel, integral with triggerguard. Scalloped steel box lock action with round-faced hammer on right side, steel square back triggerguard integral with blade. Right side of blade with an etched panel inscribed "Elgin's Patent" and surrounded by foliage, the left side with an etched panel with inscription "MORRILL, MOSMAN & BLAIRAMHERST, MASS." and surrounded by a wreath of leaves. One piece varnished wood bag grip. Complete with a reproduction brown leather sheath with brass tip. Excellent condition, retains a light grey patina overall with some scattered light freckling and dark spots. Grip very good with a few light marks. This is a rarely encountered and unique combination weapon!
