Only 1,000 made between 1817 and 1818, but were all made using parts manufactured between 1807 and 1808. This was the first pistol that Springfield Armory made. Tapered round smoothbore steel barrel, dated 1818 on top of breech, left side stamped "P/EAGLES HEAD/V". Type I flintlock mechanism with long pointed tail, goose neck cock, spear point finial on frizzen spring, and curled toe on frizzen. Center of lockplate stamped with large eagle over "US" and tail stamped vertically "SPRING/FIELD/1818". Steel furniture including Wickham barrel band. Nearly full length stock of walnut, wooden ramrod. Fair condition, barrel and some of furniture have been sanded and now retain an applied brown patina, other components have been cleaned and have no finish. Lock appears to be in original flintlock configuration and retains a dark spotted grey patina. Stock has been refinished and has some scattered marks, minor repairs, and cracks. This is a very rare pistol with a very interesting history, one of only three models ever made by Springfield.
