Only 5,700 of these contract Model 1819 rifles were made between 1830 and 1836 by Simeon North. He was the only one to deliver on his commitment, of four who were awarded contracts, including Henry Deringer, R. & J.D. Johnson and Reuben Ellis. Other than the markings and exclusively using springs to retain the barrel bands, rather than pins, these rifles are identical to other Model 1819 rifles. Round steel barrel with rifling extending with 1-1/2" of muzzle. Breech stamped "NWP" for inspector Nahum W. Patch, fitted with front bayonet lug/sight combination, and rear sight with notch on left side, to account for action. Single-shot breechloading flintlock action with upward pivoting block, released by lever protruding from bottom of stock, located in front of the triggerguard. Block marked in front of frizzen, on top "U.S./S. NORTH/MIDLTN./CONN./1835". Typical Hall Model 1819 steel furniture and steel ramrod. Plain walnut full-length stock, stamped "18" on both sides of breech release lever and with inspector's cartouche on top of comb, in front of buttplate tang. Deeply stamped with initials "H.K.C." for Henry Knox Craig. Excellent condition, light grey patina overall with excellent markings. All steel components retain a light grey patina with some areas of minor discoloration and a few light marks. Edges are sharp and action functions well and is crisp. Stock excellent, as refinished, with a few scattered light marks and small piece of wood replaced directly behind action tang. This is an extremely nice example of a rarely encountered contract rifle.
