This Type III musket is one of only 1,600 made by D. Nippes in Mill Creek, Pennsylvania between 1837 and 1840. Round smoothbore steel barrel mounted with bayonet lug on top of muzzle and stamped with partially visible "US/JM/P" on left side of breech, tang dated "18--". Flat lockplate stamped "U.S./D. NIPPES/PHILA" in the center and vertically on the rounded tail section, it is stamped with date "1840". Standard Type III Model 1816 steel furniture, buttplate tang stamped "4". Plain walnut full-length stock of typical form with three barrel bands and replaced steel ramrod. Stock marked on left side with two clear inspector's cartouches. Good condition, all steel components retain a dark heavy-brown patina with scattered spotting and freckling, lock has been professionally reconverted, but markings are still very good. Barrel markings show some wear. Stock good, with some scattered marks from use and a couple gouges. This is an excellent example of a Mexican War musket by a rare and desirable Pennsylvania contractor.
