Only 350 of this second type were produced. About 850 total were made between 1854 and 1857 using the falling block, lever opening, action that was based on Sharps 1848 patent, but scaled down to a pistol size. The refusal of the Hartford firm to manufacture these pistols resulted in Sharps leaving the firm and relocating to Philadelphia. This is the second type, as it has a slightly larger frame size. Round rifles steel barrel roped band at breech and muzzle, front post sight and notch on breech for rear sight. Falling block percussion frame and action with self-priming percussion pellet device, integral with frame. Rounded hammer on right side, frame stamped "C. SHARPS & CO'S/RIFLE WORKS/PHILA, PA." on right side and "C. SHARPS/PATENT/1848" on other side. Steel backstrap, grip straps, and lever. Two piece figured walnut grips with steel buttcap, front gripstrap stamped with serial number 556. Good condition, grey patina overall with some minor scattered freckling, bore has strong rifling with some spotting. Mechanism and hammer are strong and functioning. Grips very good with a few light marks. This is a unique and rare piece of Sharps history!
