Probably circa 1810-1820, this appears to be a standard English trade pistol, aside from the Massachusetts surcharge on the left side of the stock. This "MS" stamped behind the sideplate probably denotes that this pistol was purchased by the state for militia use. Round smoothbore steel barrel marked "LONDON" on top and with English proofmarks and maker's mark on left side, near breech. Flat flintlock mechanism with gooseneck cock and detached pan, center of lockplate marked "W./KETLAND/& Co." Brass furniture with simple engraved single-line borders. Full length walnut stock and wooden ramrod. Very good condition, barrel retains a freckled grey patina, lock is in original flintlock configuration and retains an even brown patina, and brass is a soft darkening yellow. Stock is very good with clear marking for Massachusetts and has some period repairs on grip and a few scattered marks from use. This is a nice state-identified pistol.
