Many sources identify this as a Garrett pistol of Confederate origin. Many Confederate collections include an example of this high quality pistol. These have historically been associated as a Confederate manufactured pistols but at the same time there have been questions as to exactly where and why they were made. In "Confederate Handguns" by Bennet and Simmons, there is a chapter regarding these pistols. It assumes that they were made by J&F Garrett & Co. of Greensboro, North Carolina. In the company records, a surplus of Model 1842 pistol barrels, ramrods, hammers, and trigger guards came to assembled with a brass frame. These are very scarce pistols and this is a great example for Confederate or Civil War collectors alike. Smooth bore steel barrel stamped "NWP/P" near breech and with a brass half moon sight at muzzle. Brass frame, stamped "166" behind hammer, on right side, with steel Model 1842 hammer and brass trigger guard, steel swivel ramrod and two piece varnished walnut grips. Very good condition; barrel has been cleaned and now retains a freckled grey patina, obviously was on a Model 1842 pistol, as lines from stock and barrel band are visible. Hammer retains a dark grey patina and brass frame retains a dark and unpolished surface with a few scattered marks. Grips very good with a few scattered light marks. An interesting specimen of a Civil War era martial handgun.
