Only 1,626 made by Simeon North between 1813 and 1815. The original government contract called for 20,000 of these, but due to harsh recoil and large size, this was revised. This contract is also important because it was the first time that a gun maker offered a product with interchangeable parts. Round smoothbore steel barrel stamped "P/US" on left side of breech and "HHP" on right side, above touch hole. Flat beveled lockplate with rounded tail, brass pan, and reinforced cock, center of lockplate stamped "S. NORTH/U./eagle/S./MIDDLN. CON." Standard Model 1813 steel furniture with Wickham band. Figured walnut half-stock terminating at end of band, complete with wooden ramrod with steel tip. Has inspector's cartouche, an encircled "LS" on left side, behind sideplate, probably fro inspector Luther Sage. Very good condition, steel components retain a spotted grey patina, lock appears to be original flintlock. Breech has been sanded and refinished. Stock refinished with a few scattered marks from use. This is a fine example of a very scarce and early American martial pistol.
