This model is often referred to as the "Box Lock" Model or Model 1843. Only about 2000 manufactured between 1842 and 1847. Round smoothbore steel barrel stamped "USN/1844/NWP/P" at breech along with a small anchor stamped near bolster. Small brass post sight near muzzle. Flat internal mechanism percussion lockplate, tail section marked vertically "USN/1844", center stamped "N.P. AMES/SPRINGFIELD/MASS.", hammer stamped on face with "J" inspector's mark. Brass furniture includes round buttcap with screw in center, plain triggerguard, and barrel band, all stamped with small "J" inspector's mark. Steel swivel-type ramrod. Plain walnut half stock with two re-stamped inspector's cartouches on left side. Good condition, barrel has been cleaned and has some freckling, especially near breech and muzzle. Lock retains a light grey patina, some markings light. Brass retains a nice patina and has some scattered marks from use. Stock good with scattered marks from use, some wear, and some chipping around buttcap and on left side of grip.
