Very rare, this pistol was made in a very small quantity in 1843 and purchased by the United States Revenue Cutter Service. The Revenue service was the predecessor to the U.S. Coast Guard. Round smoothbore steel barrel stamped "R/1843/JCB/P" near breech, small front post sight is missing. Standard flat internal mechanism percussion lockplate, stamped "N.P. AMES/SPRINGFIELD/MASS." in center and "U.S.R./1843" vertically, at tail. Standard brass Model 1842 Navy furniture includes round buttcap with screw in center, plain triggerguard stamped with small "B" inspector's mark, and barrel band. Steel swivel-type ramrod. Plain walnut half stock with flat grip. Very good condition, all steel components have been cleaned bright and now retain a light grey surface with some scattered areas of freckling and a few scattered marks from use. Markings are excellent and correct. Brass retains a mellowing patina. Stock very good with a few light marks from use and some edge wear. This is an excellent and correct example of the rarest and most desirable Box Lock Model, seldom encountered and very hard to find.
