Manufactured 1863. This lovely, factory engraved, mid-war 1860 Colt Army features engraving on every part of the revolver except cylinder. All matching numbers to include wedge; with the exception of the cylinder which is 3870, four digits off the balance of numbers. Cut for shoulder stock. No. 2 in forward left trigger guard. "E" is found next to serial number on barrel, frame, trigger guard and iron backstrap; a feature often found on factory engraved guns. Trigger guard is brass. Colt factory engravers of the 1863 period were Gustave Young (1852-1869) and L.D. Nimschke (1850-1900). The scroll with punch dot background and wolf's head engraved hammer appears to be more in the line in Nimschke as seen on page 206, bottom image, in the book "Colt Engraving". Features deluxe burl walnut grips. Cylinder is rebated with Naval scene, nearly completely visible. Gun is basically a smooth grey patina. Engraving is crisp. Grips are excellent. Indexes and locks up tight. Strong rifled bore with some minor black powder abrasion. Comes in a period walnut non-factory case with red lining and includes a plated eagle and cannon powder flask, a Colt marked double cavity bullet mold, Eley cap tin, nipple wrench, and a box of combustible cartridges.
