According to the serial number, this frame was actually manufactured in 1898 but according to the factory letter, the serial number was applied on December 4, 1901. Everything on the letter correlates with this rifle with the exception of the buttstock, which is listed as shotgun and rubber, and this is curved steel. The color of the two stocks seem to match. In addition, other features listed are half octagon, plain trigger, plain stock pistol grip, checkered, sporting rear sight (now wears a Marbles sight), half magazine, takedown, and shipped on February 1, 1902. Has a blued finish with case colored hammer and lever. Barrel retains approximately 85% original factory blue, as does half magazine and forend cap. High edge wear and razor sharp edges and legends. Left side of frame retains approximately 70% blue with some evidence of cleaning; right side is about the same with some age spots. Traces of color on hammer and lever. Wood is excellent with no cracks. Winchester grip cap. Strong rifling.
