Possibly the only known Ripoll style English pistols. Circa 1760. Two-stage steel barrels with cannon muzzles and English proofs on left sides, near breeches, on both. Flat uniquely-shaped lockplates with scroll engraving and both marked "I-MACE" for English maker John Mace., reinforced cocks also engraved en suite. Flintlock mechanism also features sliding half-cock thumb safeties, waterproof pans, and unique frizzen springs. Plain walnut stocks of Ripoll form, overlaid with pierced and engraved panels of silver, in the typical Spanish style. Steel triggerguards, silver nosecaps, ramrod ferrules, and Simple Spanish style sideplates. Wooden ramrods, one with a bone cap, the other replaced with a silver cap. Very good condition, locks and barrels retain an even brown patina and markings are excellent. Stocks have a few scattered marks, minor repairs and cracks. Silver overlays with a few minor pieces replaced. Mounts with a couple minor losses and marks from use. Overall length is 7-3/4". A truly unique pair of English pistols! Not only for their style and decor but for their diminutive size. This item is from the collection of, described by, and authenticated by Herbert G. Ratner, Jr.
