This Type III musket is one of 15,530 made by Starr between 1829 and 1840. Round smoothbore steel barrel mounted with bayonet lug on top of muzzle and stamped "NWP/P" for inspector Nahum W. Patch, on left side of breech, tang dated 1834. Flat lockplate stamped "U.S./N. STARR" with a sunburst in the center and vertically on the rounded tail section, it is stamped "MIDDTN./CONN/1834". Standard Type III Model 1816 steel furniture, buttplate tang stamped "US". Plain walnut full-length stock of typical form with three barrel bands and steel ramrod. Complete with correct steel socket bayonet with triangular blade stamped "U/US" near top. Very good condition, all steel components have been polished bright and retain a bright surface with some scattered areas of freckling and marks from use. Lock and barrel markings are excellent, lock has been reconverted. Stock very good, as refinished, with some edge wear, scattered marks from use, and age cracks. One minor chip behind lockplate. Bayonet is correct and retains a matching patina with some freckling, markings excellent and deep. This is an excellent example of a Mexican War musket by a desirable contractor.
