The factory research states that serial no. 8861 was sent as a trap grade, 12 gauge, 32” barrels, right barrel IM, left barrel IM, vent rib, non-automatic safety, single-trigger, selective ejector, straight grip stock, beavertail forend, pitch: 1”, pull: 14-3/4”, drop at heel: 1-15/16”, drop at comb:1-1/2”, weight 8lbs 3oz, comb width: Full, Trap, Finish grade wood: Trap, Made for: Ed Theiss, inspected on May 12 1838, finished: May 1838. During its lifetime, the rear stock has been changed to pistol grip style with deluxe checkering and Winchester solid buttplate with exhibition grade walnut and a matching beavertail forend. The wood is matching but we do not know whether the factory performed the stock work. The frame and barrel breach have been nearly full coverage engraved in oak leaf pattern with gold outline and stippled background. Left side of frame has a gold inlaid pheasant and a Pointer. The base has an inlaid gold dog head. Right side of frame has three inlaid gold water fowl. Gun retains virtually all of the finish applied at time of custom decoration. Trigger is gold plated, wood is near mint, exhibiting fiery grain. Auto ejectors, 2-3/4” chambers, and locks up tight. A beautiful as new inside and out upgraded pre-war model 21 custom shotgun. Simply stunning.
