Samuel Shillito worked in Chambersburg, located Franklin County, Pennsylvania. This nicely decorated rifle features an octagonal rifled steel barrel signed "S.M. Shillito" on top flat, in script, surrounded by a decorative panel. Flat stamp engraved percussion lockplate with rounded tail, marked with indistinct markings in center, double set triggers. Brass furniture includes a four-piece engraved patchbox with oval-shaped pierced finial. Sideplate with engraved broken line border. Three ovoid shaped silver inlays along each side of forend, shield-shaped vacant wrist escutcheon and small engraved teardrop inlay in front of long engraved toe plate. Brass oval-shaped inlay above cheekpiece, engraved with a detailed patriotic eagle. Full-length figured maple stock of typical Franklin County form with incise carved scrolls and florals on left side of cheekpiece. Hickory ramrod appears to be original. Very good condition with dark patina on barrel and lock,excellent signature, some freckling around breech, bolster and on lockplate. Brass is unpolished and shows little wear, engraving is sharp. Stock very good with small piece broken off above front lock tang, some cracks in forend and some minor chipping around barrel pins, small sliver replaced at toe. Overall, a very attractive and original rifle in nice, by a scarce maker.
